The purpose of the McKinney-Vento Act is to provide educational services to homeless students which are equal to all other enrolled students, and ensure that homeless children and youth have equal opportunities to enroll in, attend, and be successful in school. Your child may qualify as homeless if you are:
- sharing housing with others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reason.
- living in a motel, hotel, trailer park or camping grounds due to lack of adequate living accommodations
- guardian for a child in temporary, emergency foster care
Each school in Stanwood-Camano School District has a homeless liaison (school counselor or intervention specialist) or you may contact Michele Kunzman, Family Support Specialist and McKinney Vento Liaison, at 360-629-1392. Please contact the liaison at your child’s school or the District liaison if you think your child may qualify as homeless.

The Stanwood-Camano School District is seeking young people from birth to age 21 who are enrolled in school or not and may need special education services. Special needs are defined as concerns with hearing, vision, speech, language, health, learning, developmental delay, behavior management, intellectual disability, birth defects, orthopedic or spinal problems, autism, or other disabilities. Parents or guardians of children who may have any of these conditions and live within the Stanwood-Camano School District boundaries are encouraged to contact the District at 26920 Pioneer Hwy., Stanwood, WA 98292 or phone (360) 629-1236.
Under the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, all Stanwood-Camano Schools must be totally free of unlawful drugs and alcohol. No one is allowed to posess, use or distribute such drugs or alcohol while at school or while taking part in school activities. In addition, State Law and Board Policy prohibit the use of tobacco products or electronic cigarettes (vaping) by anyone on public school property. Disciplinary actions will be taken for drug, alcohol, vaping and tobacco violations. The law allows for discipline that may include prosecution for illegal acts, as well as suspension or expulsion for students. The District fully supports the Drug-Free School and Communities Act. It is expected that all students and employees will follow the regulations and policies prohibiting possession, use or distribution of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on school property or as a part of any school activity. Services are available within this area for students who are involved with drugs or abusing alcohol. Resources can be found by contacting school staff or your family doctor.
The Stanwood-Camano School District provides all students with access to networked services as well as to the Internet and some forms of electronic communication. Having access allows students to use online resources purchased by the district to support student learning and free internet sites. Access to the School District’s computer network is a privilege that comes with responsibilities for its appropriate use. It is important that users understand both the benefits of using the computer and the potential risks.
The School District makes a concerted effort to prevent student access to objectionable material on the Internet. District computers use Internet filtering software that is continually updated and teachers supervise computer use to assure that students are accessing information that is educationally relevant. If you have questions about your child’s use of the Internet while at school, please contact your child’s school. If you believe that your child should not have access to the Internet while at school, please notify your child’s school.
State law requires that all juveniles between 8 years old to 18 years old attend school. (A child who is 6 or 7 years old also must attend school on a regular basis if they have been enrolled in school.) The parent must notify the school as soon as possible when their child will be absent from school. Within two days of returning to class, the student must bring a note signed by the parent or guardian explaining the reason for the absence.
A parent can apply to have his or her child attend a school other than a school the student would normally be assigned. Approval depends on space and/or services available in the school or specific program. Variances require that the family provide transportation to and from school, are granted for one year, and must be applied for annually.

Federal law, state law, and school district policy protect student privacy through the following rights afforded to the parents or guardians of minors, and students over age 18.
Student directory information
Federal law allows Stanwood-Camano School District to disclose some personally identifiable information about students ("student directory information"), without written consent. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the school district to include this information in certain publications, including:
- The annual yearbook
- Honor roll or other recognition lists
- Printed programs for graduation, sports activity sheets, or a playbill showing your student's role in a drama production
