MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 18, 2020, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

        

REGULAR MEETING

 

CALL TO ORDER

Natalie Hagglund called the regular meeting to order at 6:02 PM in the Administration & Resource Center Boardroom. 

 

ROLL CALL

Board members present: Natalie Hagglund, Miranda Evans, Charlotte Murry,

Board members absent (excused): Ken Christoferson, Al Schreiber

 

FLAG SALUTE
Natalie Hagglund led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Miranda Evans made a motion to approve the Agenda for the February 18, 2020, Regular Board Meeting.

Charlotte Murry seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Charlotte Murry made a motion to approve the Minutes for the February 4, 2020, Regular Board Meeting.

Miranda Evans seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Jean Shumate introduced the following reports:

 

DONATIONS

The donations were presented by Student Advisors Jacob Platt and Aleena Wiegand as follows: 

The Stanwood-Camano School District received the following donations.

1. $229.21 from the Elger Bay Elementary PTA for the December 6th Fusion Choir performance field trip to Utsalady Elementary, and

2. Will Hemenway of Edmonds, Washington, donated a Fender Electric Guitar and AMP valued at $200.00 in support of the Stanwood Middle School Band Program.

 

AWARDS

The Board honored the following award recipients:    

Volunteer Service Award: John Anderson, Stanwood High School, and Teresa Chandler, Utsalady Elementary.  

Shining Stars: Carley Workman, 5th Grade, Utsalady Elementary, and Teanna Holsey, 12th Grade, Stanwood High School.  
Teacher of the Month for January: Geri Prater, Stanwood High School

Classified Employee of the Month for January: Ginna Randall, Utsalady Elementary

RECESS

Natalie Hagglund recessed the regular meeting at 6:36 PM so the board could individually greet and congratulate award recipients and allow for those who wanted to leave.

JANUARY FINANCIAL REPORT

Steve Lidgard, Executive Director of Business Services, presented the January Financial Report.  Mr. Lidgard highlighted information in the Executive Summary, the Fund Balance as a Percentage of Revenues, Object Summaries (Wages and Benefits), and the Budget Status reports.

 

CONSENT AGENDA

Natalie Hagglund called for any comments or items requested to be pulled from the Consent Agenda.  Charlotte Murry requested the Personnel Consent Agenda, item #6, be pulled for discussion to learn about Ross Short’s request to attend the ACTE (Association for Career & Technical Education) National Policy Seminar.  There being no further comment or items to pull, Miranda Evans made a motion to approve Consent Agenda items #1 through 5, and #7.  Charlotte Murry seconded the motion; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

 

1.  Stanwood High School Field Trips (a-e), as listed below:

a.  FFA Horticulture Career Development, February 28-29, 2020, Yakima, WA.
b.  Girls Wrestling State Tournament, February 20-22, 2020, Tacoma, WA.
c.  Boys Wrestling State Tournament, February 20-22, 2020, Tacoma, WA.
d.  Boys Swim State Tournament, February 20-22, 2020, Federal Way, WA. 
e.  Boys Basketball State Tournament, March 3-7, 2020, Tacoma, WA.

2.  John Swanson, Stanwood High School Mathematics Teacher, to solicit students to participate in the S.T.E.M-Based Educational Field Trip to Alaska, June 2021. 

3.  Awarding Credit for State Assessment Competency. 

4.  Adoption of Curriculum Materials as recommended by the Instructional Materials Committee. 

5.  Career and Technical Education Skilled and Technical Sciences Program Re-approval. 

6.  Personnel Consent Agenda.

DISCUSSION

Ross Short, Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE) shared attending the seminar allows him to receive updates on federal legislation/policy around CTE education and how programs must be operated to comply with the law, and to receive guiding resources that can be specific to Stanwood-Camano School District CTE programs and students, including implementation of the Federal Perkins V Grant.  

 

There being no further discussion, Miranda Evans moved to approve Consent Agenda item #6, Personnel Consent Agenda.  Charlotte Murry seconded; it was voted on and approved unanimously.

 

COMMENTS BY CITIZENS

Kelly McGill, Stanwood resident, addressed the Board regarding two concerns; Transportation and Principal Tod Klundt.

 

STUDENT ADVISORS’ REPORT

Jacob Platt reported ASB officers were elected on February 6; seniors have started working on Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation (SCAF) scholarship packets; Lincoln Hill High School students joined Stanwood High School students to attend the Josters Leadership Conference at Snohomish High School; and, Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation (SCAF) Philanthropy Volunteer Awards have been locked in.

 

Aleena Wiegand reported the Winter Ball on February 8 was well-attended and a lot of fun; the Leadership Class attended the February 11 Leadership Conference and good information was gained to support students; the February 12 and 13 Knowledge Bowl went well; Mid-Winter Break was February 14 through 17; and, ASB class elections will happen in the next month or two.

 

ITEMS BROUGHT UP BY BOARD MEMBERS

Charlotte Murry thanked everyone for attending the meeting.

Miranda Evans shared she really enjoys the opportunity to do recognitions and present awards.

Natalie Hagglund offered congratulations on passing the levy, adding it is a great feeling to know the community supports students.

Jean Shumate thanked the community for supporting the levy and expressed appreciation for the team effort on getting the information out.
